It’s Like Living In Alice In Wonderland

 When you don’t have to try to believe 6 impossible things before breakfast because they are happening in front of your eyes, you know you might have landed in Wonderland.  Which is exciting. And I am only talking about taking a walk outside and looking at nature. This is what happened during a walk on Sunday - ok it was after breakfast but before lunch.  I had never seen snow smoking before. I had never seen how a river freezes over. I had never seen anyone fishing out of a tiny hole in the ice, with a fishing rod less than 50 cm long.  I hadn’t seen sunrises that start 2h before the sun hits the horizon. I had never seen roads so white with snow despite cars running on them. And I did not know where they were putting the snow they take out of the ground so you can walk on the path. I also didn’t realise they don’t remove all the snow, they compact it so you can walk on it without sinking in it. And they make little hills on the side of the roads, at the corner of ...

First Snowstorm

On the 1st of September, I landed in Umeå. My first time in Sweden, and the first time so far north. Funny that. When I landed in Singapore 25 years ago, I had never been that far east. I had spent almost no time thinking about that place. I wouldn’t have been able to place the country on a map. So, another place, another adventure. When I left temperate Europe for tropical Asia all these years ago, I thought I would mostly miss the seasons. It turns out the seasons are just different, it just takes a long time to notice small differences. Still, what disappeared was the obvious ”hibernation” period, which precedes the ”Spring Cleaning” so there is no reset time.  I promise I will write at length about the role the environment has played on my time in Singapore.
